Edgeworth family papers, 1781-1984.

Correspondence, receipts, and legal papers documenting the Edgeworth family's experiences in Ireland and the Carolinas from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries, including social customs, economic outlook, and agricultural concerns, with comparisons between the people and conditions between the old world and the new. Contains early family papers copied from originals in the British Isles documenting the life of the Edgeworth family in Ireland and the United States, including naval service of Richard Edgeworth (1744-1817) off the African coast, 1781-1783; his assessment of the favorable prospects for emigrants in the United States, ca. 1790s; commentary on the War of 1812; economic and agricultural conditions, ca. 1820s, in Stateburg and Camden; and life on the frontier, Chesterfield District, S.C. Also contains Reconstruction era letters depeciting grim economic conditions, with comments re freedmen, and the possibility of importing European labor for the Edgeworths' cotton plantation. Twentieth century papers include courtship letters, 1913-1916, exchanged between Marie Edgeworth (1894-1976) of McBee, S.C., and John Edgar MacDonald (1893-1983) of Hamlet, N.C.
